Most of my Retired Males and Females stay with me until they part to the rainbow bridge due to old age, this helps me keep a eye on longevity on my lines. But if you see an older retired boy or girl, that is just the rat of your dreams and you can't go any longer in your life without it.. Send me an email, and we can talk about re-homing he or she to you.. I'm always more then welling to part with my older Ladies or Gentlemen when I know they are going to a good home. Most of my Retired guys are around the age of 6mons to well over a year, my females are always retire after the 2-3rd litter and are never brought back to retry any breeding's, this is cruel and unfair towards them., and the boys usually after a 1 and half years of breeding.. it all depends on if they are still up to being studs..lol
All my rats live in colonies, I have a female colony and a male colony, I usually don't let rats live by themselves do to aggression or dominance. This usually means bad breeding or a genetic red flag. Rats that are not able to be housed in a colony life are adopted out as solitary pets to singles who need an apartment friend or even college students who need the dorm room mascot. All rats are bred to be colony friendly regardless if it had been raised alone for 3 months. My hubby calls it " Colony stupidity". Which makes sense, all my rats are pretty much Colony Stupid.. you can throw them in any cage and they don't pick fights or start trouble.
I've been selectively breeding my rats to be more rag-dolly, and more laid back. This is way I only breed 4-5 litters a year, the rest of the time, i'm studying, my rats and doing genetic research. I'm always improving on my rat genetics and trying to make my rats better. I breed my rats to be so laid back that the introductory phase for playing with them is shorter then most. I have rats that I have sent to families who will play with them for days on end, but then go on vacation for weeks at a time, and come back to find that their rats are just as sweet and loyal.. These are rats I am honored came from my rattery.
I know breeding rats is a long and hard process, and I'm always striving to make them better, my rats are very special to me.. not just tools to make money like some breeders who breed for quantity not quality. And you can see that in the amount of babies they produce in a years time or even a months time.
The quality of my rats are very important to me, I have been breeding my rats in Colorado since 2002, and I'm probably one of the most beloved breeders when it comes to the most uniquely patterned, colored, and most wonderful tempered rats around.
I might not be very big only housing less then 20 rats. But I can say my rats are more then pets.. they are Family.
So if you are truly looking for the one of a kind family member to bring into your life. You've found the place. Yes my waiting lists are long and it might take a month or 2 before you get a rat, but honestly would you just buy any dog in a petstore, or would you go to a breeder who knows what she's doing, and who takes her time and only breeds a select few litters a year. Not 6,7,8,..or even 10-13.. You decide.
